Less commissioned than George, and better for it. Michael’s dragon is not a beast guarding a hoard — it is the old adversary, seven-headed, wearing crowns it was never given the right to wear. Dürer drew it for the Apocalypse series and did not soften a single head.
I find I prefer this one. George kills a creature that inconvenienced a village. Michael kills something that claimed a throne. The stakes, at least, are honestly stated.
Whether either man was right about what he was fighting is a separate question. This plate doesn’t answer it.
